Wow what a revelation this album is. I started to listen to it and stopped because l realised l was missing some of the elements of the tracks, so l put a pair of headphones on and started again. Wow, wow, wow now l was in heaven! These two maestros are amazing musicians to say the least. The complexity of their playing, the phrasing and charts are brilliant to say the least. This is a seriously good album and one l must admit l had dismissed at first because it is a instrumental album. I like instrumentals but not a lot end on end, but that is until now. Outside of jazz and classical, few exclusively instrumental albums come across this desk. This is one of them and from the unlikely blues genre. It’s difficult to recall any blues record shy vocals. The Likho Duo are an equally improbable pair of musicians. Noé Socha on guitar and harmonica is a 20-something Italian. Cliff Schmitt is a product of the University of North Texas, a generation older and plays doghouse bass. They came together as a duo only a year ago in New York City. Both have significant visual impairment. The Likho name is taken from a wicked one-eyed forest gnome in Slavic mythology and Socha and Schmitt play their music wicked good.
This album is six original compositions and eight blues chestnuts. The blues standards are doubly familiar because most have been covered in rock and roll by Cream, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. A prime example is track two, Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful.” The Likho take starts with a load of bricks-heavy bass line that’s sweetened by hummingbird-light blues harp. The two sounds come together like lovers coupling after a spat. Socha’s “Romance Among Thieves” is reminiscent of cinema soundtracks from his country’s great directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci and Federico Fellini. It conjures a vision of doomed jewel thieves locking lips under a medieval bridge. Schmitt-penned “Waltz for Katja” is gentle as a lullaby. Bass, guitar and harmonica dance slowly together in melancholy cadence. Willie Dixon gets another salute on a deliberately paced “You Shook Me.” It feels like Delta blues played from a dusty Clarkesville front porch. Clocking in at nearly eight minutes long it’s enough to shake the happiest home to its foundation.

This CD represents the legally blind Italian acoustic guitarist and rack harmonica player Noé Socha, who now lives in New York and the bass player Cliff Schmitt. The tracks are all instrumentals and contain some very impressive rack harmonica playing, especially when Noé plays in unison with his guitar licks. Much of the material is blues based, drawing on the likes of Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson I and others, Led Zepplin, European pop music of the 60s, and a little bossa nova and jazz. Wenn beim Likho Duo "Blues And the World Beyond” draufsteht, ist auch "Blues And the World Beyond” drin. Z. B. Willie Dixon’s "Spoonful”, Muddy Waters’ "I Can’t Be Satisfied” oder Freddie Kings "Hideaway” machen die Blues-Seite aus. Das "Beyond” dagegen besteht u.a. aus Hoagy Carmichaels "Georgia”, aus Led Zeppelins "Black Dog” sowie aus eigenen Kompositionen, welche von Walzer bis zu italienischem Folksong beinahe alles abdecken. Und dies rein instrumental – no vocals! Aufgenommen wurde unplugged mit akustischer Gitarre, Rack-Harmonica und Stehbass, direct-to-tape. Es spricht für die Klasse der beiden unerschrockenen Kämpen, dass diese CD während der gut 67 Minuten Spieldauer kaum Hänger aufweist. Ja, es ist zum genauen Zuhören gedachte Musik, lebendig zwar, doch nix für eine Party-Sause. Besonders der aus Italien stammende Noe Socha glänzt als Könner, der seine klassische Ausbildung nicht verleugnen kann, jedoch seine Downhome Blues Players intensiv studiert hat und sein Talent vielschichtig einzusetzen weiss. Basé à New York, le duo s’est formé fin 2016. Noé Socha, 26 ans, joue de la guitare et de l’harmonica et Cliff Schmitt, 46 ans, de la contrebasse. Et les deux sont plutôt doués. En acoustique, ils reprennent un répertoire essentiellement instrumental composé de huit standards du blues (‘Spoonful’, ‘I Can’t Be Satisfied’, ‘You Shook Me’…), de quelques airs traditionnels italiens (Noé Socha est natif de Capri) et de compositions originales puisant dans le jazz, le folk, la valse, avec même quelques échos manouches. Chaque instrument est bien mis en valeur et en 67 minutes l’album déroule 14 titres. Plein de finesse et de délicatesse sous-tendu par une réelle intensité, cet enregistrement distille des ambiances fort agréables. C’est tour à tour sautillant, langoureux, émouvant. En déployant une réelle virtuosité, le duo montre une certaine simplicité dans son expression et cet album qui véhicule une certaine allégresse a beaucoup de charme. Faut-il voir de l’humour ou du dépit dans le nom de leur duo ? Noé Socha est pratiquement aveugle, Cliff Schmitt lui ne voit que d’un œil. Ils s’imaginent donc comme un cyclope, c’est pourquoi ils ont décidé de se baptiser Likho, nom d’une créature effrayante n'ayant qu'un seul œil, personnification du mauvais sort et de la malchance dans la mythologie slave. Ce bel album devrait leur ouvrir des horizons lumineux.

Le duo s’est formé il y a tout juste un an autour du guitariste et harmoniciste italien Noé Socha et du contrebassiste Cliff Schmitt et c’est sans plus attendre qu’il s’est attelé à la réalisation de son premier album entièrement instrumental dans lequel Likho Duo reprend à l’envie et à sa propre sauce les standards du blues mais aussi quelques chansons traditionnelles italiennes pour en arriver à une sorte de grand melting pot agrémenté de plusieurs compositions de l’un et de l’autre des protagonistes. Outre le fait d’être de brillants musiciens, Noé et Cliff ont la particularité d’être non voyant pour le premier et de n’avoir qu’un œil valide pour le second, un œil pour deux donc, ce qui les a poussés à adopter le nom d’un monstre à un seul œil comme nom de groupe … Sélectionné pour représenter Long Island Blues Society au prochain International Blues Challenge à Memphis en janvier 2018, Likho Duo nous dévoile dans « Blues And The World Beyond » quelques-unes de ses multiples facettes et se montre autant à son aise sur des blues primitifs où les slides de Noé font des merveilles que sur des morceaux plus étonnants où entrent des rythmes comme la valse ou encore le tango … De Willie Dixon à Muddy Waters et de Freddie King à Sonny Boy Williamson en passant par Led Zeppelin et JB Lenoir, c’est tout un pan de l’histoire du blues dans ce qu’elle a de plus vaste que les deux complices nous proposent de découvrir au travers d’un album aussi surprenant que réussi dans lequel on se régalera autant d’un « Spoonful », d’un « I Can’t Be Satisfied », d’un « Hideaway » ou d’un « Good Morning Little Schoolgirl » que d’originaux comme « Debby Street Blues », « Romance Among Thieves » et autres « Waltz For Katja ». La sobriété rythmique de la contrebasse associée à une guitare pleine de subtilité et à un harmonica criard juste ce qu’il faut et voilà un premier album plus que prometteur pour un duo acoustique que l’on croisera avec plaisir en janvier prochain sur Beale Street. Curiosa aportación al blues la de este dúo formado por el guitarrista y armonicista italiano Noé Socha y el bajista y contrabajista Cliff Schmitt. Ambos se presentan con un álbum completamente instrumental en el que se incluyen seis canciones originales y ocho standards interpretados todos en formato acústico. Estos dos músicos se conocieron en New York y pronto entablaron amistad al darse cuenta de que a los dos les interesaba el mismo tipo de música, por lo que decidieron juntarse para tocar de forma profesional y es en dicha ciudad donde actúan habitualmente. Noé tiene veintiséis años y proviene de una pequeña ciudad de Italia. Allí fue donde descubrió la música por la que quedaría prendado. Gente como Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters o Lightnin’ Hopkins tocaron su fibra, por lo que decidió viajar a Estados Unidos en busca de nuevas oportunidades. Por su parte Cliff tiene cuarenta y seis años y descubrió el blues gracias a la colección de discos de blues y rock de su padre. A lo largo de su carrera ha actuado junto a Michael Powers o Curtis Stigers entre otros. Noé es prácticamente ciego y Cliff solo tiene visión en un ojo. El nombre que han escogido profesionalmente, Likho Duo, hace referencia a un personaje de la mitología eslava que sólo tiene un ojo, tal como les ocurre a ellos, y que a menudo se asocia a la desgracia y la mala suerte. Već nakon prvih preslušavanja postaje jasno da ova dvojica glazbenika na vrlo ekspresivan i efektan način prezentiraju svojim instrumentalnim skladbama nama poznate blues n' rock standarde u nevjerojatno nadahnutim aranžmanima. No, isto tako, vrlo su sigurni i osebujni u svojim autorskim skladbama. Naime, budući da ih do sada nisam slušao iznenađujuća je upravo ta atmosfera, ugođaj kojeg stvaraju u svojim skladbama no, naravno, da biste to mogli izvoditi baš na takav način morate biti vraški dobri instrumentalisti, koji imaju sve u malome prstu. Vjerujem da je iza njih vrlo ozbiljan rad i impresivna želja da se nešto napravi baš ovim glazbenim žanrom. Sve što čujemo svojom upečatljivošću, svojom određenošću tradicionalizom i nadasve produhovljenom svirkom sve nas koji volimo ovaj glazbeni stil ostavit će bez teksta. Tome samo govori u prilog činjenica da se u svim dijelovima zemaljske kugle nalaze ljudi, glazbenici koji naprosto cijelu ovu priču jednostavno imaju i nose u sebi. Njihova prezentacijska forma sjajno se uklapa njihovo poimanje ove glazbene forme, a blues poklonike će svojom snagom i virtuoznošću baciti u trans. Tu vam predlažem poslušati kako oni izvode poznatu pjesmu M. Watersa "I Can't Be Satisfied" – ništa manje i ništa više nego... impresivno!
Da, njihova kemija iznenađujuća je i jednako efektna kada izvode poznate tradicionalne blues pjesme i kada izvode nevjerojatno lirične skladbe poput "Romance Among Thieves" i "I'd Say", kao i, primjerice, "Black Dog" Led Zeppelina. Za Likho Duo zaista nema nikakvih prepreka, a vjerujem da će svi koji su posegnuli za ovim albumom biti itekako iznenađeni i izuzetno zadovoljni onim što čuju. Što ćete od skladbi izabrati za svoje favorite ovisi isključivo o vama samima, jer ta priča ide dvosmjerno od glazbenika ka slušatelju, a sve ovisi o vašim afinitetima. Moji se itekako dobro znaju i stoga problema nema: "Spoonful", "You Shook Me", "Hideaway", "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" i "Georgia On My Mind" uz već navedene pjesme zasigurno su moji favoriti. No, isto tako to ne znači da ne uživam uz ostale instrumentalne teme. Dapače, no ovo sam jednostavno zbog sebe samoga morao istaknuti.
Cijelu ovu priču dodatno podcrtava činjenica da obojica glazbenika imaju problema s vidom, ali sjajno vide i još bolje osjećaju baš tu kemiju koja vlada među njima. Naime, Cliff je i punih 20 godina stariji i odlično svojom zrelošću kompenzira dvadesetšestogodišnje "brije" mlađeg Noe. Zajedno zvuče itekako snažno, uigrano i postojano.

"Blues And The World Beyond" Likho Dua svakako treba imati u svojoj fonoteci, to je više stvar nevjerojatne prezentacijske forme poznatih blues standarda i snažna poruka svima: i na ovaj i ovakav način može se prezentirati ovaj vrlo zahtjevni glazbeni izričaj.
Iskrena, vrlo osobna prezentacijska forma Likho Dua kako u blues glazbi, tako i u drugim glazbenim stilovima u sebi nosi ogromnu količinu plavičastih tonova, ali i neospornu glazbenu educiranost i vraški dobru instrumentalističku potkovanost! --- Mladen Loncar, Sound Guardian, Croatia
